The Asalato — also known as Kashaka — is a percussion instrument of African origin, made from two turned wooden spheres connected by a cord. It's held in a single hand: one sphere in the palm, the other swinging free. With a rotating motion of the wrist, the two spheres strike each other producing a crisp, precise and rhythmic sound, able to build complex patterns from a simple gesture.
The basic technique is learned in just a few minutes — but the instrument grows with whoever plays it, becoming a tool for rhythmic improvisation, coordination and presence in the moment. Also perfect as an object of mindful movement, similar to a moving meditation practice.
