The MEINL Percussion CA7BR Cabasa is a hand percussion instrument inspired by Afro-Brazilian tradition, designed to deliver the authentic sound of the classic cabasa with a modern, highly durable structure.
Its shape and function echo those of the traditional calabash cabasa, but the use of premium fiberglass makes this instrument extremely durable and suitable for intensive use, both in teaching and performance settings. The natural brown color recalls the look of traditional instruments.
Playing techniques
The cabasa can be played mainly in two ways:
- Controlled rotation
Resting the slightly curved palm of the hand on the bead chains and turning the handle with short, decisive movements produces a rhythmic, defined sound. - Shaking motion
Holding the handle vertically and keeping the cylindrical head horizontal, the instrument is shaken back and forth, causing the beads to strike the surface of the cabasa for a more open, dynamic effect.
Thanks to these techniques, the cabasa is extremely versatile and suited to Latin, Afro, funk, jazz, pop music and rhythm education.
